The Salt River Heritage Society organised a walkabout at the Two River Urban Park, recounting, in particular, the Battle of Salt River which took place on the 1st March 1510 in this area.
The Battle of Salt River involved the crew of a Portuguese fleet led by Francisco de Almeida and the indigenous ǃUriǁʼaekua. It resulted in a defeat of Portuguese forces and a victory for the ǃUriǁʼaekua, and was indeed the first military encounter between Europeans and indigenous people in the land that would later become South Africa.
