The USS Yorktown sits anchored at Patriots Point in Charlestown, South Carolina, a towering Essex-class carrier that once crossed the Pacific in war and now serves as one of America’s great naval museums. Commissioned in 1943, Yorktown fought through the final campaigns of World War II, returned to duty in Korea and Vietnam, and later launched the Apollo 8 recovery mission.

From above you see the full scale of the ship. The long flight deck holds a collection of historic aircraft that trace the evolution of naval aviation. You find F-4 Phantom II jets, A-4 Skyhawks, and an A-7 Corsair II positioned at the bow. An F-14 Tomcat stands watch with its wings folded. Nearby sits an S-3 Viking, an F-18 Hornet, and older prop-driven icons like the TBM Avenger. Helicopters line the deck and hangar spaces, including a CH-46 Sea Knight, AH-1 Cobra, and UH-1 Huey.

The museum complex extends beyond the carrier with additional displays on the pier, including armored vehicles, anti-aircraft guns, and smaller naval craft. The destroyer USS Laffey and the submarine USS Clamagore complete the historic fleet.

Seen from Google Earth, the entire site looks like a preserved battle group frozen in time. The Yorktown remains a powerful reminder of American sea power, aviation progress, and the generations who served on its steel decks.
