Every time you double insulation R-value, you cut the rate of heat loss in half. That fact doesn't change, even when you increase insulation from R-100 to R-200. More insulation by 2X always reduces the rate of heat flow by half.

More insulation = More resistance to heat flow = Lower energy bills (ideally). This is the basic principle. As you add more insulation, it gets harder and harder for heat to escape your home in the winter and enter your home in the summer. This translates to using less energy for heating and cooling, saving you money.
The catch: The benefit of adding insulation decreases as you add more. The first few inches of insulation make a big difference in reducing heat flow. However, as you keep adding layers, the additional benefit gets smaller and smaller.
The point of diminishing returns: There's a sweet spot where adding more insulation becomes less cost-effective. The extra energy savings you get might not outweigh the cost of the additional insulation and installation.
At that point, it would be better to focus on air sealing and weatherstripping.
