Footage of one of the voting days during the 1983 Nigerian Presidential Elections, the first to be organised under a democratic administration. The 1979 elections were held under the auspices of the military government led by General Olusegun Obasanjo.

There is a brief interview with Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and Mr. Tunji Braithwaite, the leader of the Nigeria Advance Party (NAP) is seen casting his vote.

The election was won by Alhaji Shehu Shagari, the leader of the Nigerian National Party (NPN).

Shagari was overthrown by an army coup in December 1983.
