Free Will vs Determinism – Are We Truly Free or Just Following a Script?
One of the most debated questions in philosophy is whether human beings truly have free will or if our lives are entirely governed by determinism. Free will suggests that we consciously make choices, and our future depends on our decisions. Determinism, on the other hand, argues that every action is a result of prior causes—our genetics, upbringing, environment, and even social conditions—leaving little room for real freedom.
Dr. Vikas Divyakirti often explains such philosophical issues in a simple and practical way. If we look closely, our decisions are influenced by many external and internal factors. For example, the language we speak, the food we like, or even the career path we choose often depend on where we are born and the culture we grow up in. From this perspective, determinists argue that our “choices” are not entirely ours but shaped by circumstances beyond our control.
However, rejecting free will completely would make human responsibility meaningless. If everything is pre-decided, then concepts like morality, justice, or punishment lose their foundation. Hence, many philosophers adopt a middle path called compatibilism. This view suggests that while external conditions influence us, we still have the capacity to reflect, evaluate, and choose within those limits. For instance, two people born in the same conditions may still respond differently because of individual reflection and effort.
In conclusion, the debate is not about absolute freedom versus complete determinism, but about the balance between the two. As Dr. Divyakirti might highlight, we may not be entirely free from circumstances, but we are not merely puppets either. Our true freedom lies in becoming aware of the influences upon us and still exercising conscious choice within them.
