Thanks @wmvansise8797 and Eric Mason for lending me this Fender Rosewood Telecaster! It's a Made in Japan one from the 2010's
This is the album version of I've Got A Feeling, take 1 from the Rooftop Concert. It was released on Let It Be (1970). To see footage of the live performance, watch Peter Jackson's 2021 Get Back doc, or the original 1970 Let it Be movie. OR...check out my Beatles instagram fan page '3 Savile Row' to see lots more Get Back footage
John Lennon used his 1965 Epiphone Casino and George Harrison used his Fender Rosewood Telecaster for the rooftop performance. They both were plugged into 1968 Fender Silverface Twin Reverbs, very loud and clean 100 watt amps
So how did they get these crunchy tones out of such sterile and hard-to-distort amps? It's been a debate among Beatles gear nerds for decades, and there still is no definitive answer. It could've been that these amps were protoypes sent by Fender with different circuitry, and they had to turn them up because they were playing outdoors. Or maybe the signal wasn't distorted, but made to sound this way afterwards, during mixing?
I was able to achieve similar tones by using my 1974 Fender Silverface Pro Reverb amp and some overdrive/boost pedals. The Pro Reverb is very similar to the Twin Reverb, with two 12" high powered speakers. But the Pro Reverb is 40 watts and less clean
For John's Casino, I'm using my 2021 Epiphone USA Casino into the Pro Reverb. I'm using an Analogman Bad Bob Boost pedal into a Klon KTR overdrive. The Bad Bob is a clean boost that is pushing the next pedal, the Klon KTR. The KTR is the same pedal as a Klon Centaur, which can be used as a boost or a medium-gain overdrive. I have it set with the drive knob at 11 o'clock, and the volume at 10 o'clock, which is pushing the amp a bit. The Pro Reverb settings are- Vol 2.8, Treb 6.2,
Bass 1.9
John starts the song off in the bridge pickup, with the tone knob rolled way down. At certain points, he is seen switching to the neck pickup. Because the neck pickup tone knob wasn't rolled down, it is distorting, with more treble than the bridge pickup.
Here are my knob settings for the Casino-
Bridge Pickup: Vol 10, Tone 1.5
Neck Pickup: Vol 10, Tone 6.2
For George, I'm using the Fender MIJ Rosewood Tele into the Pro Reverb. I'm using an Analogman King of Tone pedal on the boost side, which is pushing the Analogman Bad Bob Boost. The King of Tone boost is set with lots of treble. The Pro Reverb settings are- Vol 3.5, Treb 7.2, Bass 2.8
Although George's tone is very bright, he's on the middle position of the Telecaster throughout the whole song, as seen in the movie
Interesting Notes:
0:01 John's picking pattern is down-UP-UP-down-up-down-up-down- UP-UP. I found it interesting, when I saw the film footage, that the second note is an upstroke, not down
0:26 here, John plays a D note on the b-string for the second to last note in the riff
0:34 the last note George plays on the ascending lick, he slides up to 5th fret of A
1:09 John switches to the neck pickup. George turns up vol knob
1:26 John switches back to bridge pickup, turns down vol knobs
2:22 George hides his pick, and uses his fingers to pluck
2:32 John switches to neck pickup
2:39 John plays the A7 on 5th frets longer, then 4th fret. Instead of just going 5, 4 ,3
2:41 John's breakdown riff is sloppy, he stretches his fingers too far and plays an Eb note instead of a D on the 4th fret of b-string
2:46 John switches to bridge pickup and George plays without pick
2:58 George uses pick again
3:08 John switches to neck pickup
3:10 John stays on 3rd fret of ascending A7 riff, instead of going to 4th fret
3:27 George fiddles with his vol knob
