My name is Mat. I am a regular guy in my 40s with a full time job and a family trying not to retire broke.

I completely agree with that video. And to be clear, this is not political. I feel the same way no matter who is in office.

Previous generations grew up expecting pensions and Social Security to carry them through retirement. Those days are gone. Pensions are basically extinct. And even if Social Security is still around, the average check is under two thousand dollars a month. That is less than twenty four thousand dollars a year. That is not comfort. That is survival.

So even if you get it, it is not enough to live the kind of life most people imagine when they hear the word retirement. That realization forced me to stop assuming someone else would handle my future.

Am I late to the game. Absolutely. But it is not too late. Especially now that people are living longer, which means retirement is not a short chapter anymore. It can last decades. Decades that still need income.

That is when it really clicked for me. Hope is not a strategy. Assuming things will work out is not a plan. Personal responsibility is the only thing I actually control.

So I stopped asking what the system might give me one day and started asking what I can build myself right now.
