Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 4K Cinematic Sony (Is the $299 Super Wide-angle lens any good?)
Just picked up the Tampon 20mm f/2.8 E mount lens for my A7RIII. So before I picked up this lens, a lot of people on the internet curious why buying the 20mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/2.8 instead of the 17-28mm f/2.8 one lens. There are couple of reasons, first the size. This lens is super tiny. I would say its almost like a pan cake lens. And f/2.8. Second, the weight, this lens weight about 221g. That is nothing when you mount it on a full frame A7RIII. Third, its a prime, even though the lens is still f/2.8 like the other Tamron zooms, but the quality of this lens is really nice and really sharp. Fourth, you can use this lens as a macro lens. The close focusing is amazing.

The reason why I picked up this lens, its because I do travel a lot. And I always want something nice and compact. One lens doesn’t matter. When I go travel I like to shoot wide anyway. I do own the Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 lens. Its a great lens. But the size and weight are nothing close to this Tampon 20mm. I mean the Zeiss Batis might be a bit sharper. Before quality is more important than anything else for me. But now things have changed. I rather enjoy my holiday more than carrying 7-8 lenses and a big full frame camera. I could even live with an a6600 no problem. I realize content is more important. I have seen a lot of great videos online which was shot on a GH4 or a6000.

So over all, its a really nice lens. Its pretty sharp at wide open. But when shooting indoors, I realized the lens has quite a bit of distortion. I mean for stills, that’s an easy fix in photoshop. But for video, might have to be careful when shoot straight lines.

Pros
- Compact
- Very affordable price consider it is that wide
- Sharp
- Close focusing almost like a macro lens

Cons
- Quite a bit of distortion
- Video AF is not that smooth
- Wish it was in f/2.0
