17-year-old Jack Johnson surfs in the Pipe Hawaiian Trials 03:00 while Kelly Slater, Todd Chesser, Shane Dorian, Todd Holland, Matt Archbold, Mike Stewart, and friends surf at Off The Wall. Liam McNamara wins the Trials over Johnny Boy Gomes, Larry Rios, Michael Ho, Marvin Foster, Tony Moniz, Vetea David, Erin Grabarek Gerry Lopez, and others.

"The effort of 17-year-old Pipe local and natural-footer Jack Johnson to make the trials final is worth remarking on for the sole reason that he finished ahead of other Pipe “names” like Marvin Foster, Gerry Lopez and Tony Moniz on the day. Young Jack was understandably stoked with his perfor­mance because he’d competed with and beaten a few of his surfing idols.
