Switzerland is building a new, €21.5 billion railway across the Alps, boosting transport efficiency and positively impacting the environment. The project, which is called “The Railway Link Through the Alps”, consists of four tunnels: the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel, Gotthard Base Tunnel, Ceneri Base Tunnel and Lotschberg Base Tunnel. The Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is the deepest and longest railway tunnel in the world, will stretch 57 kilometers across the mountains at a depth of 2.3 kilometers. The Ceneri and Lotschberg base tunnels, at lengths of 15.4 and 34.6 kilometers, are also remarkably impressive. Once fully complete, the project will enable high-speed transit across the Alps, boosting transport efficiency, uniting Europe and positively impacting the environment.
