A key figure of the second half of the twentieth century, the British guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream, who modernized the torch of the Andalusian Andrés Segovia while ensuring the renewal of music in the Tudor era, died on Friday, August 14, at the age of 87, in his small house in Donhead St Andrew, in the county of Wiltshire. From John Dowland to Benjamin Britten, the musician has tirelessly covered four centuries of a repertoire that he played with an exquisite art of tone and color, but also with verve and panache.

Born on July 15, 1933 in Battersea, near London, to a father who was a commercial illustrator, pianist and guitarist in an amateur jazz band, the young Julian Bream was 11 years old when he was given his first classical Spanish guitar. But it was in the piano, cello and harmony classes that the young boy did his musical studies at the Royal College of Music in London, notably between 1949 and 1952 (the guitar, according to him, was frowned upon). It is thus almost self-taught (with the help of his father) that the child prodigy becomes a virtuoso of the instrument that will make his glory.
