Hey everyone, welcome back to Decode The Hacks! Today, we're diving into an important topic for all you cybersecurity enthusiasts and IT pros out there. If you've recently been facing issues with your Windows Azure Virtual Machines due to the CrowdStrike outage, stick around because we've got a step-by-step guide to help you get things back to normal. Let's get started!

If your Azure VMs are stuck in a boot loop, showing a Blue Screen of Death, or your Serial Console is unavailable, follow these resolution steps.

Option 1: Restore VM from Backup

Recommended for static workloads with valid backups from before 19:09 UTC on July 18.
Not recommended for Domain Controllers or Database workloads.
Option 2: Repair OS Disk

Works for Gen V1 and V2 VMs (additional steps required for Gen V2).
Prerequisites: Staging resources and VM must be in the same region and availability zone as the affected VM. Get customer approval as multiple VMs may be needed.
Resolution Steps for Gen V1 VM:

Go to the affected VM, take an Incremental Snapshot of the OS Disk.
Create a new disk from the snapshot in the same region, RSG, AZ as the affected OS disk.
Attach the new disk to the Staging VM.
Log in to the Staging VM.
Use Disk Manager to "Online" the disk if it's not already.
Remove the impacted file.
Detach the new disk from the Staging VM.
Swap OS Disk in the affected VM with the new disk.
Boot the affected server.
Resolution Steps for Gen V2 Azure VM:

Follow the same initial steps as Gen V1 for taking a snapshot and creating a new disk.
Attach the new disk to the Staging VM.
Log in to the Staging VM and use Disk Manager to "Online" the disk.
Assign a drive letter to the boot (EFI) partition.
Use Server Manager to set a drive letter.
Locate and note the path of the BSD file.
Note the drive letter for the Windows Partition.
Update and run the necessary command prompt scripts to fix the boot configuration.
Detach the repaired disk from the Staging VM.
Swap OS Disk in the affected VM with the new disk.
Boot the affected server.
This guide should help you fix the impacted Azure Gen V1 and V2 VMs.
