For this webinar on World Malaria Day (April 21 2024), we heard from the 2023 George Macdonald Medal recipient, Professor Arjen M. Dondorp, who gave his medal talk on the topic 'antimalarial drug resistance in uncomplicated and severe falciparum malaria in Asia and Africa.'

Professor Arjen Dondorp is an infectious disease and intensive care physician based at the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit in Bangkok, Thailand, where he is the Deputy Director and heads the Malaria and Critical Illness research department. He is a Professor of Tropical Medicine at the University of Oxford, Professor of Translational Global Health at the University of Amsterdam, Visiting Professor of Clinical Tropical Medicine at Mahidol University in Thailand, a Fellow at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development and a Fellow of The Academy of Medical Sciences in the U.K. His main research interests include the pathophysiology and treatment of severe malaria, antimalarial drug resistance, new treatments for drug resistant falciparum malaria and the improvement of intensive care practice in developing countries.

The George Macdonald Medal is a joint award between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and RSTMH. It recognizes outstanding contributions of individuals who have conducted research leading to significant improvements in health in the tropics.
