In Solids, liquids, and gases, the arrangement of the molecules is not the same. In gaseous substances, the arrangement of molecules is not close while in liquids, it is moderate. But in solids, the molecules are so closely arranged then the electrons in the atoms of molecules start to move into the orbitals of neighboring atoms and the electron orbitals overlap when the atoms come together. Because of the combining of the atoms in solids, instead of single energy levels, bands of energy levels are formed. This set of energy levels that is packed closely is called an energy band.
