Jaflong Travel Guide
Jaflong, located between tea gardens and hills, is the tourist hotspot of Sylhet, a hill station, positioned on the border between Bangladesh and Meghalaya, the north-eastern state of India. Also home to the Khasi tribe, Jaflong is famed for its lush, tropical setting and the areas of natural beauty surrounding it.
These areas include the Piyain River, which flows between Bangladesh and India and is renowned for its crystal clear water that allows visitors to vividly see the array of underwater stones. In Jaflong, visitors can also take in the cascading waterfalls and rich greenery of the mountains of Meghalaya, and visit the historic Dawki Bridge, a suspension bridge built by the British in 1932 and a road border crossing between Bangladesh and India.

For maximum visual impact, Jaflong’s “Zero Point” is the place to be. Along with more spectacular waterfalls is one of Jaflong’s famed attractions: its vast range of underwater stones that are of different shapes and colours. Borne from the mountains of India by the powerful flow of the endless cascades, the stones add rich texture to the tranquil beauty of the Zero Point. The shimmering transparency of the water also attracts tourists to bathe, swim and relax in the water and surrounding sand fields.

The waterfall Songram Punji or Mayabi Jhorna, is only a 10 to 15 minute walk from Zero Point, and is a popular hotspot for tourists to frolic in. Another waterfall, Khasia Village, is on the other side of the Piyain River and can be accessed by boat.

No trip to Jaflong is complete without sampling the local produce, and the many local markets in Jaflong sell the varied and interesting items made by the Khasi tribe. An ancient people who are indigenous to the Meghalaya region, they have a unique mythology and belief system that often influences the products they make.

Best time to visit Jaflong
Because of the easier access, most tourists visit Jaflong in winter. While the Zero Point can be reached during winter, and its beauty enjoyed, the waterfalls are unlikely to be at full strength due to a lack of rainwater.
During the monsoon season, the heavy rains transform the waterfalls into a spectacular vision, with dramatic cascades flowing from the mountains, lush greenness. However, “Zero Point” goes underwater during rainy session due to flood.
How to reach Jaflong
The distance from Sylhet City to Jaflong is about 57 km, and can be travelled via bus and microbus. Bus options include the “Gate-Lock” service, which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to get to Jaflong at a cost of Tk. 110. While normal bus service cost 70 taka, but take longer journey of around 2 hours 30 minutes due to more stops and pick-up locations along the way.
Both services start from Subhanighat in the city, with the Gate-Lock beginning its journey at 9am and thereafter running every hour. The other type of bus service departs every 10 minutes.

Rent a Car or Microbus
Alternatively, tourists can rent a car or microbus from various important locations of the city such as Subhanighat, next to Osmani Children's Park or Nayarpool. Each stand features cars and microbuses, and rental prices range from Tk. 3000 to Tk. 5000 for a whole-day. While it is not recommended for this journey, travellers can opt for the CNG driven Auto-rickshaw, which costs Tk. 1200-1500 for a whole-day hire. This will result in a gruelling 2-hour journey to Jaflong.
Where to Stay in Jaflong
The Hotel-Inn is located in Jaflong's Mamar Bazaar and is only 1.6 km from the tourist centre of Zero Point. This can be travelled in 7 to 8 minutes by car and 15 to 20 minutes on foot. Room charges in this hotel are around Tk.1500-1800 per night.
Close to the border of India is the Jainta Hill Resort, which is around 6 to 7 km from Jaflong. Room rental is Tk. 2300 to 4000 a night. Even further out is the Nazimgarh Wilder Resort, which is located at Lalakhal – about 27 km from Jaflong. This is around an hour away but the resort’s access is very secure – no-one is admitted without being accompanied by a resident guest. The charge for staying in this resort is Tk. 12500 to 44000 a night.
