Animal and plant species and their habitats are exposed to the effects of human activity and challenges along the Danube: pollution from untreated sewage, agricultural fertilisers, contaminated sites and waste disposal, as well as soil erosion from arable lands. Fragmentation of ecosystems, land use intensification and urban sprawl produce further problems to nature conservation in the Danube Region.
The loss of natural habitats caused by these factors affects fauna and flora and the overall quality of environmental health. The Priority Area dealing with Danube biodiversity, landscapes, air and soil quality addresses these challenges considering ecological requirements in the Danube Region. It is preoccupied with establishing green infrastructure and restoring the degraded system, protecting and supporting the endangered species, as the sturgeon and other indigenous fish species, and identifying invasive Alien Species.
