Two stage carving is not difficult and perhaps used when ever possible. I made four big changes to this sign which I think made a huge different.
1. Wood selection. I used much too soft of a wood at first
2. Carving to deep. It is not necessary to carve deep
3, Using Two Stage Carving. A rough pass to remove bulk of material really helps and reduces sanding.
4. Bit selection.
Also, prefinish the wood was a major advantage.
