Machines Learning is a short film about labor, management, and how it's important to be nice to robots. It was shot and animated entirely in Unreal Engine 5.4.

This was supposed to be a very quick starter project that took no more than 3 months (stop me if you've heard that before, animators). It's now been well over a year, and in between I've spent a lot of time on 2 other film projects that are currently in pre-production / development, not to mention the Locodrome suite of character animation tools.

I've restarted this project 3 times, as my definition of "good enough" evolved along with my skill level (also something I'm sure a lot of new artists can understand), but it's nice to finally be seeing the finish line more clearly. Making this film almost entirely by myself (in Unreal Engine, Blender, Adobe Substance 3D, and DaVinci Resolve) has been an enormous learning experience.

The music was done by the very talented ‪@tysoncazier‬, also the first time I've worked with a composer on a fully original score for an animated film. He brought a clever electronic sensibility to my initial prompt of "industrial Tim Burton movie". Anyone else looking to score a film or game, grab him up - he's awesome.

I hope you enjoy the trailer. I'll be posting more behind-the-scenes and process videos too. The full film will hopefully have a good festival run, and once that is complete I'll post that too.
