Lord of the Rings Deleted Scene: The Quest of Erebor

Why did Gandalf choose Bilbo?
This story is compiled from two accounts: one in ‘Appendix A’ of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and the other in ‘Unfinished Tales’. I have done a little bit of editing to make them fit together.
This excerpt fits nicely towards the end of the chapter ‘The Steward and the King’ in ‘The Return of the King’.

I wish so much that this scene was included in ‘The Lord of the Rings’. It is such a lovely scene of a few members of the Fellowship getting to relax and spend some time together after all they have been through. As well, it is a wonderful example of ‘grumpy Gandalf’ which is perhaps my favourite version of the great wizard.

Reading this for the first time after being such a fan of ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ for so long was such a joy! To find out that there was MORE of my favourite story and to be able to look back on ‘The Hobbit’ in a new light was just thrilling. I now have a copy of this printed out that I keep in my copy of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ so that I can read it in its proper place.
