How to Get a TIN (Tax Identification Number) for Your Business in Nigeria
Getting a Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a mandatory step for any business operating in Nigeria. The TIN is issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and is used to track tax obligations. Here's how to obtain it:

1. Register Your Business
Before you can apply for a TIN, your business must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). You will need your:

Certificate of Incorporation (CAC documents)

Memorandum and Articles of Association

CAC Form(s) showing directors or business owner details

2. Apply for TIN
Once your business is registered, you can apply for your TIN either online or at the nearest FIRS office.

Option A: Online Application via Joint Tax Board (JTB)
Visit the JTB TIN Registration Portal

Click on “Register”

Fill in your CAC Registration Number and other required details

Submit the application

Your TIN will be generated and displayed if successful. You can print the TIN certificate.

Option B: Offline (Manual) Application at FIRS Office
Visit the nearest FIRS tax office

Submit a copy of your CAC documents

Fill out a TIN application form (provided at the office)

Submit the completed form and documents

Your TIN will be issued and you may receive a certificate

3. Collect Your TIN Certificate
If applying online, you can download it directly from the portal.

If applying in person, you may need to return to collect the certificate or it may be emailed to you.

4. Verify Your TIN
After registration, you can verify your TIN at the JTB TIN Verification Portal

Important Notes:

Sole proprietors and companies both need TINs.

TIN registration is free of charge.

TIN is required for opening corporate bank accounts, filing taxes, and doing business with government agencies.
