"KALIBUTAN: The World in Mind" Virtual Tour

The exhibition takes inspiration from the Visayan word 'kalibutan,' which refers to both the world and consciousness. It is a dense and intricate term because it brings together world-making and worldview. The world is embodied, on the one hand, and the body is enworlded, on the other. It is rare for a word to register simultaneously cosmos and cognition, speculation and the universe. This is the prompt for the curatorial work on the Visayas: to create conditions for expressive material that speaks to the range of stimuli of an active ecology.

The subsidiary title “The World in Mind” pertains to the state of being in the world, thinking through the world, and finally looking after it with care as well as with anxiety, affection, or even obsession. Mindfulness of the world acknowledges complicity in its production as well as the indeterminacy of its vastness.

The ecology of the art world can only mutate with the ecology of the practice, alongside the sites of production, from communities to studios and on to diasporic settlements, from museums to political seminars and on to public spaces. And in this specific instance of a multifaceted project, the word kalibutan brings forth a worldliness that seeks to encompass and internalize its own timeliness. This can only be instructive as far as art history and contemporary art are concerned in which at once the erotic, and therefore the sensuous, and the epistemic, and therefore the mindful, inform the turns of art.
