Before Maharana Pratap and Shivaji Maharaj, if there was any ruler who challenged the Mughals, it was Rani Durgavati. She was named Durgavati because she was born on the day of Durgashtami in the year 1524. Just as Mother Durga takes care of her devotees, similarly Queen Durgavati took care of her subjects too! Her husband died only after 7 years of marriage, after which Queen Durgavati ruled for the next 16 years! When Akbar, who considered women a cheap thing, sent a golden cage to Durgavati and said that the queens should live inside the palaces only. Akbar was shocked by Queen Durgavati's sharp reply. After giving a befitting reply to two attacks of Akbar, when the third attack came, suddenly an arrow came and hit the queen in the eye, but she did not allow herself to be captured alive by the enemies and sacrificed herself by putting her dagger in the chest. Today on women's day, we salute such a brave woman of Mother India!
