In this video, you will learn about the brain's inherent focus on survival rather than happiness, which leads to a negativity bias. This bias is a form of mental filtering that skews our perception toward negative thinking patterns, often intensifying feelings of depression and anxiety. The video highlights the critical role of mental flexibility in combatting these rigid thinking patterns. It emphasizes how our selective attention shapes our reality; by constantly focusing on the negative, we strengthen brain pathways that reinforce these unhelpful thinking patterns. You'll also discover how media plays a role in feeding this negativity bias, impacting our mental health. The video delves into how rigid thinking can influence various aspects of life, including relationships and decision-making. Most importantly, it offers practical strategies like gratitude journaling and cognitive defusion techniques to break free from this cycle. By engaging with this video, you will embark on a journey towards more balanced and flexible thinking patterns, paving the way for improved mental well-being.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...
