On the night of 31 January and the morning of 1 February 1953, the Netherlands were struck by a major flood.

Sections of Rotterdam also stood under water, such as the floodplains along the Nieuwe Maas or parts of the island of IJsselmonde where, in total, ten people lost their lives.
These pictures give you an impression of the consequences of this disaster for Rotterdam.
