3. Algeria gets its name from the French designation l’Algérie, who in turn borrowed the term from the Catalan Aldjère, Arabic al-Jazāʼir and Turkish Cezayir, meaning The islands. 4. Andorra’s name is a bit of a mystery. As in, we don’t know what it means. The oldest form of the word comes from Ancient Greece as Andosin, a pre-roman tribe from the area. It may derive from Basque Handia, meaning big. In local legends, Charlemagne named the region in reference to the Biblical Canaanite valley of Endor, where the Midianites were defeated.
5. Angola means Land of Ndongo. Well, actually it means the Land of ngola, a title used by e kings of Ndongo, latinized by the Portuguese.
6. Antigua and Barbuda. Antigua comes from the Spanish word for Ancient or Old, a truncation of Santa Maria la Antigua, bestowed by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Barbuda also comes from Spanish and it means bearded, a name probably derived from the appearance of the island’s fig trees.
7. Argentina is a truncation of Tierra Argentina, or Silvery Land, in reference to the Rio de la Plata, or Silver River (plata also means silver). It was so called by Italian explorer Sebastian Cabot, who received silver trinkets from the locals. The name then extended to the entire region.
