4th Grade Math 7.5, Add & Subtract Fractions with Like Denominators

We can add and subtract fractions with like denominators by modeling the problem, or by adding or subtracting the numerators and keeping the denominators the same. The denominator tells us the number of equal parts in all, and the numerator tells us how many equal parts are shaded. Fractions with common denominators represent wholes that are divided into the same number of equal-size parts. We rewrite a problem from word form into an equation, then solve. We find the sum or difference, then write the answer in simplest form if needed. When shading fraction bars to model the problem, we make sure to put the shaded parts next to each other without gaps. We decide if an equation and its answer is true or false. We solve two word problems involving addition or subtraction of fractions with like denominators.
