For all musicians and rasikas it has been difficult to digest the shocking news that Pandit Rajan Mishra had died of Covid-19 complications. He died at a hospital in Delhi as they were unable to secure a ventilator for him on 25th April 2021. Rajan Ji was a gem of a person and a star of Indian classical music whom everyone looked up to with awe and respect. He was an inspiration for all that came into contact with him. Pandit Ji has left behind an eternal silence and an unsurpassed legacy that will remain with us forever.

We pulled out this special concert performance from our archives – one of our favourites - in which he had performed Raag Mian Ki Malhar with his brother, Pandit Sajan Mishra. The impression of this raga was left on the mind of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was sitting as an audience member during this performance. He then went on to play the same raga during his performance the next day.

In a Darbar interview by Jahnavi Harrison with Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra during their Darbar Festival appearance, Rajan Ji said, “We strongly believe, Indian (classical) music can bring peace and silence to the world.”

It feels surreal to prepare and upload a tribute video in his memory. But perhaps the best way to remember him and his colossal contributions to Indian classical music is through his voice and his music.

Mere words cannot express our collective grief, but the best way to offer our prayers to his departed soul is through his music. May his family come out of this inconsolable grief; May millions of lives be touched and healed through his divine music.
