French left-wing leader Jean-Luc Melenchon calls for recognition of Palestinian state

France will recognise the State of Palestine, the leader of left-wing France Unbowed party, Jean-Luc Melenchon, promised.

On Sunday, Melenchon told supporters that the New Popular Front (NFP) will push for the recognition of a Palestinian state

Melenchon said the group must mobilise and work for an NFP prime minister, which is something he discussed with France Unbowed president Mathilde Panot and fellow left-wing politician Manuel Bompard.

The NFP came out on top in the French general election on Sunday, ahead of the presidential camp and the far-right National Rally.

The NFP - formed last month after President Emmanuel Macron called snap elections - brought together the previously deeply divided Socialists, Greens, Communists and France Unbowed in one camp.
