So what is apple cider vinegar exactly? And why is it so good for us?
Apple cider vinegar is a fermented liquid made from crushed apples. When the crushed apples are exposed to yeast, the sugars turn to alcohol. Once bacteria is introduced to this solution, the alcohol turns to acetic acid. Essentially, apple cider vinegar is sour wine made from apples. In fact, the word vinegar means “sour wine” in French.
To ensure you’re getting all of the great benefits apple cider vinegar has to offer, make sure to choose an organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar that contains the "mother." The mother is made up of proteins, enzymes, and “good” bacteria. It’s what gives raw apple cider vinegar its murky appearance.
If you’re new to the product, it might look a little funky, but this is normal. And it’s the component that many experts believe is responsible for the health benefits of apple cider vinegar.
There are tons of brands, but the most popular—by far—is a brand called Braggs. It’s organic. It’s raw. And that’s what you want. You can find it on Amazon, health food stores, and even many regular grocery stores.
So let’s talk about ACV’s benefits...
It kills bacteria:
Vinegar is often used for cleaning and disinfecting—and studies suggest it really does kill bacteria. Because of this, ACV is often used topically to treat small wounds, warts, nail fungus, and head lice.
Helps prevent food cravings
Sour foods can reduce sugar cravings and help dieters lose weight. Because apple cider vinegar is a great sour elixir, drink diluted with water before meals to help reduce your food cravings.
Lowers blood sugar levels
The acidity in ACV shunts the glycemic response when consumed with carbs. In fact, several studies show that apple cider vinegar improved insulin sensitivity during a high-carb meal by as much as 34 percent!
Improves heart health
Though more human studies are needed, animal studies suggest that apple cider vinegar lowers cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure.
May protect against cancer
Interestingly, there are some studies that suggest some types of vinegar can kill cancer cells and even shrink tumors. The research is minimal—and there haven’t been any conclusive studies in humans—but it’s food for thought!
But guess what: That’s not all apple cider vinegar can do. When I asked my readers how THEY use it, I got nearly 500 responses. We wrote a whole article about it on MamaNatural.com. Link in the video description below, or just google “101 uses for acv”
Here are some of my readers’ more… unusual suggestions:
As a weed killer, laundry whitener, flea spray for pets, a facial toner, a hair rinse, a boost for a chicken’s immune system, and as a cleaner for menstrual sponges. Oh yeah, we're going there.
Convinced that apple cider vinegar is worth a try? Let’s talk about how you can incorporate it into your daily routine.
You can, of course, drink it straight up. But most people prefer to dilute their apple cider vinegar in water before drinking it. Generally this means putting anywhere from 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and guzzling down. You might want to use a straw to protect your teeth from ACV’s acidity… or else just drink it fast and rinse out your mouth afterward.
You can easily sneak it into salad dressings and sauces, too. Just remember: You want to make sure it’s RAW apple cider vinegar to get the most therapeutic effect!
