Guide to Shifen, Taiwan // Day Trip from Taipei

Shifen is a great day trip (or half day trip) from Taipei, in Northern Taiwan.

It's easy to get there on the train, and the round trip ride will cost about $5!

From Taipei, head to Ruifang, and then change trains to Shifen.

The Shifen Waterfall is about a two kilometer walk from the train station, through Shifen's Old Street.
The waterfall is part of the Keelung River.  It’s almost 70 feet high, 130 feet wide, and the widest waterfall in Taiwan.

At the waterfall itself, you’ll find an observation deck which is accessible to all. Plus you can walk down to a few lower-level platforms for a better view.

Back in town, the buildings and shops along the Old Street originally went up along the rail line, which was used by miners to transport coal.

The big flying paper lanterns that draw tourists to Shifen today were used as a signaling system for the miners.
It’s become a famous tradition in Shifen to write your wishes on the lanterns, and ignite a fuel source under them to send them flying above town.

After exploring Shifen, it's easy to take a taxi down to Keelung, a fishing port on Taiwan's northern coast.
Keelung is home to a small but thriving night market, which opens in the afternoon, rather than the evening, full of street food which is heavy on seafood.

Or, you could couple a trip to Shifen, with another half-day stop in the old mining town of Jiufen in the mountains.

No matter the path you choose, you'll love escaping Taipei for a day! Shifen is a beautiful place to explore and enjoy the fresh air.
