The North American XB-70 Valkyrie is an experimental supersonic strategic bomber used by the United States Air Force. Developed in the late 1950s, the Valkyrie has up to 6 large jet engines, achieving a maximum speed of Mach 3 at an altitude of 70,000 ft (21,000 m). Despite its great speed, the XB-70 is not recognized as an interceptor fighter. The Valkyrie was the fastest bomber of its time.
Development was then transferred to a research program to study the effects of long-duration high-speed flight. Only two prototype aircraft, designated XB-70A, were built; these aircraft were used for supersonic test flights during 1964–69. In 1966, a prototype (the AV-2) crashed after colliding with a smaller aircraft while flying in close formation, killing two pilots and seriously injuring one. The remaining XB-70 Valkyrie bomber (the AV-1) made its final flight to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for display in the museum (now the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, Ohio).
Only 2 XB-70s were produced, and the cost of each one reached a "horrible" level, up to about 750 million USD, equivalent to 5.2 billion USD at 2018 prices. Total cost for the program program is 1.5 billion USD. All 2 aircraft were delivered to the US Air Force, and not only the US Air Force but even the US space agency NASA used it for testing. Currently XB-70 has been retired.
