Dubbed as 2021 SG, the asteroid flew close to the planet on September 16, but because it came from the direction of the Sun, scientists didn't see it coming.

Asteroid 2021 SG is almost four times larger than the 17-meter space rock that disintegrated over Chelyabinsk, Russia, on 15th February, 2013

It is as wide as the wingspan of a Boeing 747.

The Chelyabinsk meteor created a shock wave that broke windows in six Russian cities.

Astronomers finally picked up the asteroid 2021 SG discovering it for the first time a day later on September 17, 2021 using a large telescope, the 48-inch telescope at Mount Palomar in California.

It came from the direction of the sun. And if they do, too perhaps more so – to scientists who work to detect near-Earth asteroids, in an effort to keep our planet safe.

If it entered our earth's atmosphere, an asteroid as big as 2021 SG it would produce a very huge impressive meteor. Asteroid 2021 SG isn’t just big. It’s also a fast-moving asteroid, traveling through space at the amazing speed of 85,748 km/h or 23.8 km per second relative to Earth.

The orbit of 2021 SG shows it’s an Apollo type asteroid that completes a revolution or orbit around the sun every 27 2.24 years. This time, it passed Earth just after just passing Mercury’s orbit.

But NASA currently has no means of accurately detecting asteroids closer to the Sun.

However, this may soon change. NASA is in the middle of constructing a new space telescope that would help with this effort. Called NEO Surveyor space telescope, it is set to be launched in 2026 and will be in orbit between the Earth and the Sun, allowing it to better detect these objects.

It is believed that NEO Surveyor will be able to detect around 90% of near-Earth asteroids with a width of 140 meters or more a size that could destroy a city if they impacted.

However, as the discovery of 2021 SG shows, the risk of unexpected asteroids closer to the Sun remains a possible threat.
