In 2013, California inmates launched the longest hunger strike in the state's history, and arguably the largest hunger strike in human history, with over 29,000 inmates refusing meals on the first day. The year prior, organizers of the movement successfully issued a peace treaty between rival racial groups in the prison system to unite the prisoner class against the use of indefinite solitary confinement. Ten years after the peace treaty, several movement organizers have been caught up in federal racketeering indictments, while others have been re-isolated in the same conditions of solitary confinement they first organized to protest.
