The metal cutting of the indigenously made single-engine fighter plane Tejas (Mk-II) was scheduled for February 2020 but now it looks like it would be pushed for Apr 2021 and this process would take about a year to 18 months. The Tejas Mk -II, which will be fitted with a GE-414 engine, is scheduled to make its first flight in 2023 tentatively.

The reason why IAF has choosen this aircraft is that it will come with more unique featues like

a. Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar in place of Multi-Mission Radar (MMR)
b. Integration of latest sensors like Infra Red Search and Track (IRST) and Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS)
c. Close Coupled Canard
d. Multi sensor data fusion
e. Increased internal fuel & improvements in maintainability
f. OBOGS (On Board Oxygen Generating System)

Supersonic drops tanks, retractable air-to-air refueling (AAR) probe, quick turnaround\role change and fly-by-wire flight controls with upgraded Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC) are some of the other features of the MWF.

The MWF will have 11 hard points (to carry ammunition/drop tanks) as compared to seven on Tejas Mk-1/1A. It will also be able to carry eight Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles. The ammunition pack on MWF include heavy and long range stand-off air-to-ground weapons, Laser Guided Bombs (LGBs), conventional bombs, Beyond-visual-range missiles, Close Combat Missiles (CCMs) and smart precision weapons.

MWF can carry weapon loads up to 6,500 kg and the maximum All Up Weight will be around 17,500 kg.

The aircraft is planned to be equipped with an artificial intelligence based “optimally manned” cockpit. The cockpit will be designed such that the ground control would be able to takeover the controls of the aircraft in case the pilot becomes unconscious, after being alerted by a sensor in the helmet of the pilot.

In October 2010, General Electric F414 was selected as engine for Tejas Mk2. The final contract for 99 aeroengines worth $822 million was signed in late 2012 or early 2013 with an option for 49 more that could be exercised later. As per the agreement, eight engines will be bought off-the-shelf, while other 91 will be built in India under transfer of technology.

The F414-GE-INS6 has dry thrust of 57.8 kilo Newtons (kN) and 97.9 kilo Newtons (kN) of wet thrust. F414-GE-INS6 features a Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC) system. A full authority digital engine (or electronics) control (FADEC) is a system consisting of a digital computer, called an "electronic engine controller" (EEC) or "engine control unit" (ECU), and its related accessories that control all aspects of aircraft engine performance.

Tejas Mk2 will have increased internal fuel capacity of 3.3 tonnes, while canards will be attached near nose to restore maneuverability of the aircraft.

Another major update is that the Medium Weight Fighter might be loaded with the Rudra M-III angular stealth missile. RudraM are family of Tactical Air to Surface Missile in development by DRDO for needs of next-generation aircraft. RudraM Family consists of RudraM-I, RudraM-II, RudraM-IIA, and RudraM-III which are all based on the same sub-sonic air-launched cruise missile technology
