In Out of Context Pt 4: Where Two or Three Gather, Walking The Text Founder Brad Gray tackles Jesus’s well-known promise that “wherever two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.” When Christians are meeting, you’ll often hear leaders say, “Let’s celebrate the fact that God is among us because Jesus said, “where two or three are gathered, there I am among them.” But is that what this passage is saying?

Actually, by following the literary flow of Matthew’s Gospel, we discover that Jesus spoke these words while teaching his disciples how to navigate conflict in the Christian community! He knew calling broken people to participate in the ongoing work of his kingdom would be messy. If they stood any chance at confronting the chaos around them, they’d also need to know how to confront the chaos within their own community. So, Jesus gave his disciples a model for navigating such painful and difficult conversations.

However, Jesus didn’t just give them a model. He also gave them authority to bind and loose; the ability to discern what types of behavior to prohibit and allow. In essence, “where two or three gather” is Jesus’s commitment to be uniquely present when his followers navigate these kinds of painful conversations. By the end of Out of Context Pt 4: Where Two or Three Gather, you’ll fully understand the original context and you’ll never be able to hear these words the same way again!
