Books on Architecture and Landscape from the Rare Book Collection of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library

This exhibition has the title Building Buffalo because the books on exhibition here (and many more in the Library’s vaults) were generously given or carefully purchased to help Buffalo grow into a great metropolitan center. They were to provide the sources of knowledge with which the Buffalo Public and the Grosvenor libraries, the city’s two greatest democratic cultural institutions (later brought together in the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library), could educate the city’s architects and its diverse population in the traditions of the world’s cultural riches. The institutions collected broadly. They started with the books that documented the architecture of Greece and Rome and assembled materials from the great Western medieval traditions as well. They did not neglect early works on Asian architecture and works from the Indian subcontinent. They collected architectural pattern books that local builders could use to erect houses, churches, institutions, and industrial buildings. With the development of Buffalo’s park system, landscape design was a natural point of focus for the Library. The imaginative breadth of the librarians and their supporters is impressive; the libraries even competed with one another to provide architectural resources for the city. Architects also augmented the collection with donations. In two respects, therefore, these are the books that built Buffalo. They are part of the city’s growing cultural heritage, what turned the frontier village into a great city. And the ideas and images in these books supplemented the imaginations of the city’s architects as they built Buffalo. These are, in short, the books that record great buildings and convey great architectural ideas; they are the books that helped build buildings. For decades this collection lay hidden behind the digital records of the Library. Scholars had visited the Library to examine certain books, but the aspirations of the Library as a whole had not been identified. Curators Nicholas Adams (Vassar College) and Francis R. Kowsky (Buffalo State College), with Grosvenor Library Rare Book Curator Amy Pickard and assisted by Nicole Kondziela, have brought this collection to light. They have shown how the Library’s visionary supporters built Buffalo’s remarkable collection. Like the built heritage of the city around us, the books constitute a precious cultural resource matched by few other cities.
