Dhanyashtakam Day 05/08 by Swami Aparajitananda, Chinmaya Mission Chicago-Yamunotri.

Pujya Swamiji, through the Dhanyāṣṭakam, explains that the essence of spirituality lies in quietening the mind. In this discourse, Swamiji discusses how the mind remains restless and anxious due to three primary areas of desire:
त्यक्त्व ईषणात्रयमवेक्षित मोक्षमार्गाः
भैक्षामृतेन परिकल्पित देहयात्राः।
ज्योतिः परात्परतरं परमात्मसंज्ञं
धन्या द्विजाः रहसि हृद्यवलोकयन्ति॥ (Verse 5)
Until we are exposed to the teachings of the scriptures, the mind remains unaware of the higher goal of life. It assumes that the purpose of existence is merely to eat, drink, and be merry. If this remains the goal, the mind becomes consumed by three desires:
1. Vitteshna – The desire to accumulate wealth and possessions.
2. Putreshna – Attachment to children and family.
3. Lokeshna – The craving for societal recognition and popularity.
These desires stem from a single aim: securing one’s future and ensuring worldly well-being.
Swamiji provides a profound interpretation of the word dvija in this context. While traditionally meaning "twice-born" (Brahmin), here dvija refers to someone who has begun studying the scriptures and aspires for moksha (liberation) as the ultimate goal of life. Drawing from this understanding, Swamiji offers practical guidance to incorporate the teachings of this shloka into our lives.
Life is like a journey undertaken using the body as a vehicle. In this journey, our attitude should reflect the understanding that whatever comes is the will of the Lord—Ishwara Prasada Buddhi. This attitude leads us to amrutam (immortality). In this process, it is essential to hold onto God.
Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, while urging us to hold onto God, also provides a clear definition of divinity in this shloka. Once we firmly anchor ourselves in God, these three desires (treshnas) cease to disturb the mind. As a result, we experience true inner peace.
Those who attain this peace gain a clear realization of the Truth—a theme elaborated upon in the next verse.
