Road Trip From England to Tenerife Part 2 | Northern to Southern Spain | Ferry to the Canaries

For part two of our England to Tenerife road trip, Monika and I started the day from the town of Burgos, in Northern Spain- knowing that we must reach at least Seville by the evening, in order to allow enough time to reach the ferry terminal.

Monika found every property on booking.com on the afternoon when we were due to stay in each location. Nothing was pre-planned as we didn’t want to lock ourselves in to too strict a schedule.

Driving down through Spain on the little Fiat 500, towing the trailer with the Triumph Bonneville- the weather got warmer and warmer anymore and more dry and arid. As palm trees and cacti started appearing, you really start to get the sense of a big adventure! The roads in Spain are so empty and well maintained (just like in France), it was a joy to drive down. In the entire 1,500 miles, we were only caught in one 10 minute traffic jam, and that was in a French town.

We reached Seville by the evening and stayed in a hotel on the outskirts- it was fairly cheap, clean and convenient, but not as nice and characterful as the previous two properties we stayed in.

We woke up the next morning and headed one hour south to the Spanish port town of Huleva, where Fred Olsson and Naviera Armas ferries depart to the Canary Islands. They stop off at all of the Canaries, so you do have to wait while the ferry unloads at each island on route to your chosen island (it often takes one hour+ per island to unload and load the new passengers). We stopped off at Lanzarote, La Palma and Gran Canaria before reaching Tenerife. The had just heard of the volcanic eruption on La Palma while we were on the ferry, but didn’t see anything.

After 40 hours on the ferry, we arrived at Santa Cruz in Tenerife, drover the 50 miles south to get to our apartment, and finally arrived at 03:30 in the morning!
