The Tatkal Scheme is a ticketing program established by Indian Railways. The scheme is used for booking journeys at very short notice. The Indian Railways introduced it in all forms of reserved classes on almost all trains in India. It was introduced in 1997, when Nitish Kumar was the Railway Minister of India.

Tatkal booking opens at 10 AM for AC Classes and 11 AM for NON-AC Classes on One days in advance actual date of journey excluding date of journey

The tatkal fare is 30% fare of base fare and for 2S the minimum and maximum tatkal charges that could be applied is Rs. 10 and Rs. 15, for sleeper it is Rs. 100 and Rs.

A Tatkal ticket is available on a first-come, first served basis. Slots for the various AC classes, such as AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier and First Class open at 10 AM while that for the sleeper class opens at 11 AM. The railways reserves only a few seats or berths for Tatkal in a coach, whether it is AC or non-AC.
