Описание к видео FRANCE: PARIS: HAUTE COUTURE FASHION EVENT

(18 Jan 1997) Natural Sound

The presentation of haute couture collections for Spring Summer 1997 have begun in Paris Saturday - the house of Nina Ricci the first to exhibit.

The new collection's theme was "birds" with chief designer Gerard Pipart creating hats resembling birds.

Other fashion houses scheduled to exhibit at Paris's premiere haute couture fashion event are Pierre Balmain at Yves Saint-Laurent and Chanel, Christian Dior, Ungaro, Givenchy, Louis Feraud, Lapidus and Paco Rabanne.

And for the first time - rebellious designers Jean-Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler have been asked by the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne to show off their wares.

It was the first of the haute-couture fashion shows.

The house of Nina Ricci kicked off what will be a nearly week of exhibitions by the world's top designers.

The collection of both haute couture and pret-a-porter (ready to wear) designs started with a brown day dress with matching jacket.

Nina Ricci"s favourite colours for day wear are grey, black and white.

It soon became obvious to the crowd at the Grand Hotel that the theme for the spring/summer collection was "birds".

Models showed off evening gowns complete with brightly coloured hats resembling birds.

The popular colours for afternoon and evening wear according to the house of Nina Ricci are pink, yellow and blue.

These colours featured strongly - whether the designs were floral, striped or plain.

Also scheduled to exhibit at the majestic Grand Hotel are Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, Christian Lacroix and Valentino.

Yves Saint-Laurent, Torrente and Emmanuel Ungaro will exhibit at the Hotel Intercontinental.

Chanel will show off the work of Karl Lagerfeld at the Ritz, and Alexander McQueen, for Givenchy, will make his debut at the city's Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

Paco Rabanne's models will make the most of the atmosphere of the Moulin Rouge - home of the French cancan.

The highlight of the Nina Ricci collection was the wedding gown.

Soon after it made its grand entrance - the house's chief designer Gerard Pipart made his.

He is behind this season's designs and is proud of the "bird" theme the house has adopted.

More than 900 journalists from 40 nations, as well as 400 photographers and 60 television correspondents will review the haute couture collections until January 23.

This season's event will see a number of new and rebellious designers making their debut.

Jean-Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler as well as Britons John Galliano for Dior, and Alexander McQueen - under the Givenchy banner.

Veteran designer Jean-Louis Scherrer has been outraged by the admission of less traditional designers - namely Gaultier and Mugler.

In a show of protest he has decided against showing a collection and will instead exhibit privately.
