[email protected] Floppy fur felt hat reshaped with a steamer
Hat shaping is tricky at first,
IMPORTANT!..
keep the hat between u and the steamer so u don’t get burned!

many folks try fixing the brims of crooked soft, inexpensive felt hats at home,
usually it makes it softer and more crooked,

the trick is to spray it w felt hat stiffener
or super hold hair spray...stiffen it first.
You cannot skip this step if the hat is soft.
U can only work with a hat that has a decent stiffness. If not, build it up w spray.

it will allow a little bit of control and definition for wool felts,
always use ultra super hold hair spray if u cannot use hat sizing. Aqua net doesn't work well, any other brand of the strongest ultra hold stuff is fine, scented is ok too.

always dust the hat totally with packing tape or a lint roller until every drop of lint is gone,
we don't want to seal all that lint and dust under a coat of stiffener,
clean it first with tape, spray the underside, and cover the sweatband first. let it dry..then steam,
if u need more results, spray again, keep the coats thin..

Don't expect much results with Chinese made softer felts, and thinner, cheaper wool felts usually are going to give you poor results.
This is a technique for fur felt hats.
Yeah, it works with wool, but the results vary from not at all to pretty okay..

1 clean all the dust off the hat, every speck..w packing tape, both sides..

2 use ultra super hold hair spray, not starch, and not the brand,"Aqua net" thin coats, maybe 2 coats,i like the underside of the brim..but a thin coat on top is ok too,if u need a lot. if the hat is already stiff, skip this step.

cover the sweatband, the part that touches your forehead, the whole band covered, with a ball of tissue or however u want..don't get spray on the inside band. then let it dry completely until it feels harder, and not wet at all..a fan helps

3. then u can start steaming,if u want to. you steam a small area to soften it,

4 after u soften it w the steam, quickly hold that part of the felt the way u want and hold it completely still until it cools,it's the spray that's holding it, like a plastic shell that u melt and harden, melt and harden.. u can have a tiny fan nearby to flash cool it..for the spray too. it's a series of softening w steam, then cooling to harden, back n forth..

5. u can't over steam it, if the hat is totally wet, it never dries and you are just winding up w crap,it looks worse than before.. it's a novice mistake, don't over-steam..take breaks and let each area cool..harden into place. then keep the steam away from these areas, if u are steaming the other side of the hat and the steam hits the areas u already fixed, it will undo it all..so steam only the area u are working on.

Also if a hat is soft, don't steam it without doing the spray, u just make it worse,
and don't just steam a crown without a plan, general steam all over a crown just opens up whatever shapes are there, making them disappear..looking shapeless..
steam a particular area, and hold it,until it cools..

do each area separately, do the pinches, do the center crease, split the brim, straighten just the front, when you're done, do the side..then the back etc.. let each step cool between steaming them
when u feel the hat is getting over steamed, stop. hold the last area u worked on still, until it cools..then come back in a few minutes when the hat isn't wet or soft.. waiting a full 15-20 minutes is even better,if u can.
