Beyond photo documentation of historical monuments and cities, Wikimedia Commons can be creatively used in combination with Wikidata to produce other layers of information about built heritage. This lecture will present and explain two examples: Sound mapping of old cities and Emotional mapping of monuments.

While Wikimedia Commons is currently used mainly for photo documentation of historical monuments and cities (Wiki Loves Monuments for instance), it is actually possible to use it in more creative ways, in combination with Wikidata, to extract other types of information about built heritage.
This lecture will present these creative uses through two examples:
Sound mapping of historic cities in Morocco, as part of "Told Cities" project by Wiki World Heritage. This mapping tends to draw the sonic landscape of these cities, which allows to understand the activities and dynamics happening in different streets and buildings, and also allow people with visual impairment to "hear" the city.
Emotional mapping of monuments in London, as part of an academic project entitled "Brent through your heart", where a photography campaign on Wikimedia Commons helped us to identify the emotional landmarks in one of London's boroughs (Monuments that are emotionally important for people).
Through these two examples, attendees will explore different ways of using Wikimedia Commons and different types of information that can be extracted, beyond the conventional photo documentation.
