How to fish REDs Sockeye Salmon KENAI Russian River Getting set up I was out fishing the salmon run in Soldotna again near Kenai this year. Here are my set ups. I caught quite a few fish and even met a couple in the parking lot who had no idea on how to fish the Red run. I got them hooked up and headed down to the river. It was a slow run day, but we got our fish. They were extremely happy. Check out that video. Here are the rigs I use. These are fairly inexpensive and you need little skill. I prefer the yarn egg pattern as this is what I used steelhead fishing in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, as well as fishing here in Alaska for rainbows and salmon. My buddies on the Kenai have renamed me Yarnball. This technique makes them quick and fast. No need to spend a ton of time at home pretying a bunch of crap you'll never use. Make sure you are not using a small number 8 hook on the kenai as it will bend straight. I believe I use a #2 hook. Tight lines and best of luck! I have caught some nice trout and salmon with this artificial egg pattern. Some huge kings and Huge Steelhead fishing the Root. I even Caught an almost 30 pound Chinook/king from the Lester River in Minnesota out of Duluth/Lake Superior in the Japp Hole. I got that one mounted, was pretty close to the MN state record and I was only fishing MN at the time. It was the Largest king I saw taken from Lake superior while I fished up there quite extensively for 10 years.
