We have developed a method to unlock encrypted iPhone 5 and 5c devices protected with an unknown screen lock passcode by running a DFU attack. Our solution is software only, and requires no disassembling and no extra hardware. A standard USB to Lightning cable and a Mac are everything that one needs to run the attack.

The attack works at the speed of 13.6 passcodes per second, so it only takes 12 minutes to unlock an iPhone 5 or 5c protected with a 4-digit PIN. 6-digit PINs take up to 21 hours, yet the automatic smart attack may cut this time to 1.5 hours or less. The smart attack tries several thousand commonly used PIN combinations such as 000000, 123456 or 121212. The next step enumerates combinations based on the dates of birth, which takes about 1.5 hours. Only if both these attacks fail will the tool do the brute force of the rest of the passcodes.
