2006 Harley FXDCI Primary Noise

Been noticing some clackity clack noise coming from the primary on my 2006 Harley Super Glide Custom. Seems to be getting louder and I found little bits of metal when I drained the primary oil. Ordinarily, I would just chalk this up to the typical noises you you hear with a big twin engine, but I am concerned about the increase in noise and metal in the oil. I've owned this bike for about a year and it has been running great. About 17K miles on the odometer. Could this be coming from the compensator? Should I be concerned or just put it back together and roll with it? A friend at work just told me to put on some louder pipes and forget about it.
