Ngọc Lan passed away 21 years ago today, March 6, at the age of 44. She remains a legend of Vietnamese Music, not only because of her vocal skills but because of her humble personality which endeared her to audiences. Bless you Ngọc Lan.

Ngọc Lan was born Maria Lê Thanh Lan on 28 December 1956 in Nha Trang. She was the 5th child of 12 in a well-off family. In 1980, she settled in the United States. With singer Duy Quang, she sang at several music cafes and performances. In 1982, she moved to California. She was an exclusive contract to perform at the Ritz Nightclub in Anaheim. She became one of the most popular overseas Vietnamese singers, in a variety of music genres, and presenting over 800 songs and over 40 video clips. Her humble personality endearing her to audiences.

In 1994, at a concert, the audience noticed that her singing was less flexible than usual. Failing health had been affecting her. She married Kelvin Khoa later that year. In 1998, she made her last appearance. After a long period of multiple sclerosis and limited vision, Ngoc Lan passed awayon 06 March 2001 at Vencor Hospital, California. Her funeral was attended by a large crowd of fans and is said to be the most attended ever. And shortly after, at least 6 songs were written to commemorate a very special lady.
