The Ohaus SJX1502N/E electronic digital scale box is a simple cardboard box. Inside you have the SJX1502N/E, Quick Start Guide, AC Adapter, Warranty Card

You'll notice immediately the sticker on the top of the scale instructing you to release the red transportation lock on sub-platform of the digital scale. The Scout is delivered to you with the scale in the locked position to prevent any damage to the loadcell during transportation. The lock restricts movement to the load cell.

Now for most Ohaus Scouts models (STX, SPX, SKX) that are Non-NTEP like the SPX222, SPX1202, SPX421 etc you would follow the pictorial on the sticker and rotate the red transportation lock counter clockwise 90 degrees to the unlock position. Since the SJX1502N/E is legal for trade the National Conference on Weights and Measures which is the regulatory organization that issues an National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) Certificate of Conformance won't allow the transportation lock design used on the Ohaus Scout STX, SPX or SKX models. These models have the red transportation lock is flush with the sub-platform and you just unlock. The issue is if the red transportation lock is locked the scale will read weights incorrectly.

For the SJX the red transportation lock has a elongated barrel making it impossible to install the weighing pan unless you remove the plastic red transportation lock. Rotate 90 degrees counter clockwise you rotate 90 degree clockwise and then lift the red transportation lock out.

Next we need to install the pan support. The wide end of the trapezoid faces the FRONT of the scale. Okay so now place the black plastic pan support diagonally on sub-platform and rotate counterclockwise until it locks. For models with a round pan like the SJX622N/E you just set the pan support straight down on sub-platform.

Now just place the stainless steel pan directly on the sub-platform.

Next we need to power the scale. The Scout SJX1502N/E comes standard with the AC Adapter or you can operate the scale on four(4) AA batteries that are not included. Operating with standard off the shelf alkaline batteries is a huge advantage over the A&D EK Series or Citizen CZ-1200. If you want to operate on battery power with the A&D EK Series like the EK-1200i you need to shell out over $200 for their proprietary AND EKW09i scale battery pack. The Citizen CZ-1200 requires also a optional rechargeable battery that is around $40-$50. The problem with any rechargeable battery is if the battery dies and no longer holds the charge you have an inoperable scale and you can't just run to the store an pick up a new battery. Ohaus heard all the complaints from end users getting raked over the coals and designed their Legal for trade SJX Series to run on standard AA batteries you can buy at any store and the batteries are affordably priced. People attending jewelry shows and flea markets an AC receptacle isn't always available so being able to operate on battery is an important feature for most people.

Whenever any scale is first put into use it should be calibrated. Weight of an object is calculated by multiplying the mass of the object by the acceleration due to gravity. The acceleration of gravity is affected by location. Everywhere in the world is located differently from magnetic north. Also altitude affects the acceleration of gravity. Whether you are at sea level like we are 30 minutes north of Boston or Denver which is nicknamed the Mile-High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile (5,280 ft) above sea level effect you need to calibrate your scale to ensure accurate weighing results. The acceleration due to gravity in Denver CO is 9.796 m/s2 while in Bradford, Massachusetts it is 9.8041 m/s2

Calibration requires calibration weights and they are optional accessories NOT included with the SJX622N/E, SJX1502N/E nor SJX6201N/E. The Ohaus Scout series offers the choice of either Span or Linearity Calibration.
