The Pentagon acknowledges that it has under-reported the scope of US troop deployment to Syria where it is operating without consent from Damascus.

The US military had earlier publicly said it had around 500 troops in Syria. Now two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, say the Pentagon will likely announce that there are about two-thousand American troops there. The officials say the announcement could be made as early as Monday. Last month a senior US military commander said 4-thousand American troops were on the ground in Syria. But the Pentagon quickly reacted to the figure, saying the commander “misspoke”.
