Harmony pedals are fantastic things when used subtly and when needing to thicken up backing vocals. A vocal mic goes into the pedal, and when the pedal can “see” a root and a third from the incoming chord of a guitar or keyboard, then it works out harmonies based on the chord, outputting the harmony along with the mic signal.

What about non-chord instrumentalists? How can the pedal work out the correct harmony based on just one note?

This involves making up a backing track for a song when playing live, and feeding chords straight into the pedal. Of course, a guitarist can also do this, but what if the guitar takes a solo and you want backing vocal harmonies or string/brass parts?
