Well, there's a few stapes in between, but the most important thing you need to understand that the Node Tool is vital in good vector design. Because it allows you to select, move, or modify specific points or path segments in a path or a shape. As opposed to the “main” Selection tool, which works with an object as a whole.

The basic technique is simple. Once we create an object, we can switch to the Node Tool. We click on an anchor point, and then move it or work with the control handles on it, if any, that tell the curve of the line what to do.
